Its not very often that a game comes along which you can't quite shoehorn into any existing pigeonhole. Peggle is one such game, and the best you can liken it to is pinball, but without the flippers.

The game screen consists of a series of pegs (hence the title). Some are orange, some are blue. At the top of the screen, is you. You have to fire balls, one by one, to clear the orange pegs off each of the screen, whilst the blue pegs do nothing but get in the way. This all sounds incredibly boring - once the ball has been fired you have no control over what happens, and yet, there's is something incredibly compelling about it all.

In addition, there are green bonus pegs which offer a variety of power-ups to help get you through the game. These include bonus balls, multiball and enhanced aiming.

At the bottom of the screen, a crater-shaped 'catcher' moves left and right. If the ball lands in the catcher, you are awarded an extra ball. Your only enemy in Peggle, is gravity.

Peggle is a joy to play. The physics are spot on and you'll find yourself agonising over the optimum angle at which you should hit an orange peg in order to try to hit another one on the rebound. Add to this delicate touches such as the screen zooming into the final orange peg and going into slow motion, and you have a game which is very simple to play but will keep you hooked for weeks.

First of all, you MUST download this game. It is imperative. If you never play this game, you are missing out on an amazing experience.

How so? Well, it's phenomenally addictive, for one, with an innovative gameplay style, part breakout, part Pachinko, and looks absolutely gorgeous, with profligate use of colourful particle effects. You fire your little ball through a field of pegs and bricks and... well, it's tricky to explain, but easy to play. Not quite as easy to put down, though!

The thing about Peggle is that I wanted to like it, and I sort of did. It's Pachinko - a popular Japanese game where you, erm, drop a ball on to a series of pegs on a board.

I guess you either love or hate Pachinko, but I never quite saw the point.

Like all PopCap games, Peggle is a nicely presented game, full of the usual pretty colours and sound effects. It kept me amused for a little while but I need to do more when I'm gaming.

Not one for me.
